Ricoh Gatling 72 35mm Half Frame Film Camera

The Ricoh Gatling 72 is one of the more unusual half-frame cameras to come out of the 1960s Japanese camera boom. With its unmistakably period-correct styling and compact format, it’s the sort of camera that gets attention before you’ve even loaded a roll.

As a 35mm half-frame camera, the Gatling 72 exposes two images in the space normally occupied by a single standard 35mm frame. That means a 36-exposure roll can yield around 72 photographs, which explains the “72” in the name and makes it a fantastic camera for travel, photo walks, diptychs, and anyone who enjoys shooting a little more freely without watching the frame counter quite so closely.

Half-frame photography has had a major resurgence, and cameras like this offer a very different experience from modern half-frame options. You get the compact negatives, naturally vertical frame orientation, and tons of shots per roll, but wrapped up in a genuinely vintage mechanical camera.
