Pentax 17 25mm f/3.5 35mm Half Frame Film Camera

The Pentax 17 25mm f/3.5 is Pentax’s modern answer to the half-frame revival, combining the tactile fun of a mechanical film camera with enough modern convenience to make it an easy everyday carry. It shoots half-frame 35mm images, giving you approximately 72 photographs from a standard 36-exposure roll and producing vertically oriented frames when the camera is held normally.

The fixed 25mm f/3.5 lens provides a field of view roughly equivalent to a 37mm lens in full-frame terms, which lands right in that sweet spot for street photography, travel, portraits of friends, and general walk-around shooting. Focusing is handled through a simple zone-focus system, while automatic exposure takes care of the technical stuff. You still get tactile controls including a manual film advance lever and rewind crank, so it manages to feel like a film camera rather than a digital camera with film stuffed inside.

The half-frame format is a big part of the appeal here. Besides stretching every roll twice as far, the smaller frames encourage diptychs, sequences, and more casual shooting without feeling like every press of the shutter is burning another couple bucks.
