The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Ai-S is one of the most beloved manual focus lenses in Nikon’s lineup. Compact, beautifully built, and optically excellent, it delivers the classic fast-normal look that made 50mm lenses the backbone of 35mm photography for decades.

At 50mm on 35mm film, this lens gives a natural field of view that works for everything from street photography and everyday shooting to portraits and low-light work. The fast f/1.4 aperture allows for shallow depth of field and strong subject separation, while stopping down produces excellent sharpness and contrast.

The Ai-S version is especially desirable thanks to its smooth focusing helicoid, compact design, and compatibility with a wide range of Nikon bodies including the FM, FE, F3, F4, F5, and many modern Nikon DSLRs with manual lens support. It’s also a favorite for adapting to mirrorless systems.

The faint haze is minimal and should not noticeably affect image quality. In extreme backlit situations you may see a slight reduction in contrast, but performance remains excellent.
