Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is one of the most useful compact primes in Canon’s RF system. It combines a classic 35mm field of view with a bright f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, close-focusing capability, and a small enough footprint to make it an easy everyday lens.

The 35mm focal length hits a particularly nice sweet spot on a full-frame EOS R body. It is wide enough for street photography, travel, environmental portraits, and everyday documentary work without introducing the exaggerated perspective of an ultra-wide. Open it up to f/1.8 and you also get plenty of subject separation and useful low-light performance.

Where this lens gets especially interesting is its 0.5x maximum magnification and close focusing, giving it much more versatility than the average 35mm prime. It is excellent for detail shots, food, products, film-camera glamour shots, flowers, and other subjects where you want to get properly close without carrying a dedicated macro lens. Canon also built optical IS into the lens, which is particularly useful for handheld close-up work and on EOS R bodies without in-body stabilization.
