The Canon PowerShot G7 is one of the standout enthusiast digicams of the mid-2000s, sitting in that sweet spot between a pocket point-and-shoot and a full-on DSLR. Today, the G7 is especially fun as a stills camera. Its CCD sensor and older Canon processing deliver the punchy color, direct-flash look, and slightly imperfect digital texture that have made early digicams cool all over again. The built-in 6x optical zoom gives you considerably more flexibility than a fixed-lens compact, while manual and semi-automatic exposure modes give you room to actually nerd out when you want to.

This particular camera has one important quirk: video records without audio. Since the G7 does not have an external microphone input, this effectively makes it a stills-first camera unless you're planning to record audio separately. For photos, though, it works great.
